2、dius,volume,surfacearea,andnumberconcentrationsoftroposphericandstratosphericaerosols,fromopticaldatabyuseofmultiplewavelengths.Thisalgorithmrequiresneitheraprioriknowledgeoftheanalyticalshapeofthedistri-butionnoraninitialguessofthedistribution.Asaresult,evenbimodalandmultimodaldistribu
3、tionscanberetrievedwithoutanyadvanceknowledgeofthenumberofmodes.Thenonlinearill-posedinversionisachievedbymeansofahybridmethodcombiningregularizationbydiscretization,variablehigher-orderB-splinefunctionsandatruncatedsingular-valuedecomposition.Themethodcanbeusedtohandledifferentlidardev
4、icesthatworkwithvariousvaluesandnumbersofwavelengths.Itisshown,tomyknowledgeforthe®rsttime,thatonlyoneextinctionandthreebackscattercoef®cientsaresuf®cientforthesolution.Moreover,measurementerrorsupto20%areallowed.Thisresultcouldbeachievedbyajudiciousfusionofdifferentpropertiesofthreesui
