3、eaddressedbyeachsystemcomponentindividually.Aconsequenceofthisapproachisredundantproblemsolving,poorresourceutilisationandproprietarysystems.Toovercometheseproblemsweproposeanintegratedsystemarchitecturewhichisconsideredsuitabletoserveasageneralframeworkfordistributedm

4、ultimediadatabasesystems,andalsoforotherdistributedmultimediaapplications.Inthisarchitecturethetraditionaldivisionoftasksbetweenoperatingsystem,communicationsystem,databasemanagementsystemandapplicationsispreservedasfaraspossiblewhileaddingtherequiredmultimediaextensio

5、ns.1IntroductionMultimediahashadastrongimpactonmanyareasincomputerscience.Distributeddatabasesisoneareawhichisaffectedbytheproblemofintegratingmultimediaaccessandstorageintoanexistingsystem.Awidevarietyofproblemsmustbesolved.Therearedatabasespecificissuessuchasthestruc

6、turaldescriptionofcontinuousmediadataoritsintegrationintoexistingdatamodels[Meye91];buttherearealsootherproblemssharedwiththecommunicationsub-systemandtheoperatingsystem.Sofartheproblemsimposedbymultimediaaretackledindependentlyineachofthesesystems.Commonlytheirbasicfu
