3、ationofearlydesignconceptsanddetailsofthefinaldesign,suchasaccelerometerplacementforairbagdeployment,paddingoftheinterior,andselectionofmaterialsandcomponentcross-sectionsformeetingcrashworthinesscriteria.Inmanyfieldsofmanufacturing,simulationisspeed
4、ingthedesignprocessbyallowingsimulationofprocessessuchassheet-metalforming,extrusionofparts,andcasting.Intheelectronicsindustries,simulationisreplacingdrop-testsfortheevaluationofproductdurability.Forbothusersanddevelopersofnonlinearfiniteelementprog
5、rams,anunderstandingofthefundamentalconceptsofnonlinearfiniteelementanalysisisessential.Withoutanunderstandingofthefundamentals,ausermusttreatthefiniteelementprogramasablackboxthatprovidessimulations.However,evenmoresothanlinearfiniteelementanalysis,
6、nonlinearfiniteelementanalysisconfrontstheuserwithmanychoicesandpitfalls.Withoutanunderstandingoftheimplicationandmeaningofthesechoicesanddifficulties,auserisataseveredisadvantage.Thepurposeofthisbookistodescribethemethodsofnonlinearfiniteelementanal
7、ysisforsolidmechanics.Ourintentistoprovideanintegratedtreatmentsothatthereadercangainanunderstandingofthefundamentalmethods,afeelingforthecomparativeusefulnessofdifferentapproachesandanappreciationofthedifficultieswhichlurkinthenonlinearworld.Atthesa
