2、micreformsandopen-doorpolicy.Newcitiesandtownsaremushrooming,andtheexistentonesexpandingandstrengthening.Metropolitanareasandurbanagglomerationshavecomeintobeingandgrownrapidly.Asaresult,theurbanizationlevelofChinahasincreasedsignificantly.BotheconomicgrowthandurbanizationinChinaoccurredwithinaworld

3、widebackgroundofeconomicglobalization.Yetfromtheperspectiveofurbandynamics,localgovernmentshaveplayedapivotalroleintheurbanizationprocesssince1979,especiallysincethe1990s.Assuch,thegeneraleffectsofeconomicglobalizationonurbanspaceandsocialstructurehavebeenimprintedwithChinacharacteristics.Consequent

4、lyinvestigationsintotheurbanizationprocessinChinaandcorrespondingpoliciesandstrategiesfrombothglobalandlocalperspectivesareofnotonlytheoreticalimperativesbutalsopracticalsignificance.TheconsequencesofrapideconomicgrowthandurbanizationinChinaaretwofold.Ononehand,boththeoverallstrengthofthenationandth

5、estandardoflivingofindividualcitizenshavebeenupgraded.Ontheotherhand,problemspertainingtosustainabledevelopmentarose.Deficiencyofpublicservicesinruralareas,whichcanbeattributedtoexogenousurbanization,standsasanoutstandingfactortriggeringconflictsbetweenurbanandruralsectors.Therapidyetextensivedevelo

6、pmentincitiesandtownsrendertheecology,economy,societyandpublicsecurityinurbanareasveryfragile.Inthehighlydevelopedandurbanizedcoastalregionsthequestionofsustainabilityisparticularlypertinent.Thepaperarguesthaturbantransitionisinevitable.Therearethreedimensionsinurbantransition:(1)tomodifytheeconomic

7、growthmodelsoastokeeprapidyethealthyeconomicdevelopment;(2)toconstructandstrengthenpublicservicesinstitutions,withtheviewtopromotingharmonioussocialdevelopment;and(3)toimproveenvironmentandtoemphasize
