2、theconomicgrowthinChinasincetheinitiationofeconomicreformsandopen-doorpolicy.Newcitiesandtownsaremushrooming,andtheexistentonesexpandingandstrengthening.Metropolitanareasandurbanagglomerationshavecomeintobeingandgrownrapidly.Asaresult,theurbanizationle

3、velofChinahasincreasedsignificantly.BotheconomicgrowthandurbanizationinChinaoccurredwithinaworldwidebackgroundofeconomicglobalization.Yetfromtheperspectiveofurbandynamics,localgovernmentshaveplayedapivotalroleintheurbanizationprocesssince1979,especiall

4、ysincethe1990s.Assuch,thegeneraleffectsofeconomicglobalizationonurbanspaceandsocialstructurehavebeenimprintedwithChinacharacteristics.ConsequentlyinvestigationsintotheurbanizationprocessinChinaandcorrespondingpoliciesandstrategiesfrombothglobalandlocal

5、perspectivesareofnotonlytheoreticalimperativesbutalsopracticalsignificance.TheconsequencesofrapideconomicgrowthandurbanizationinChinaaretwofold.Ononehand,boththeoverallstrengthofthenationandthestandardoflivingofindividualcitizenshavebeenupgraded.Ontheo

6、therhand,problemspertainingtosustainabledevelopmentarose.Deficiencyofpublicservicesinruralareas,whichcanbeattributedtoexogenousurbanization,standsasanoutstandingfactortriggeringconflictsbetweenurbanandruralsectors.Therapidyetextensivedevelopmentincitie

7、sandtownsrendertheecology,economy,societyandpublicsecurityinurbanareasveryfragile.Inthehighlydevelopedandurbanizedcoastalregionsthequestionofsustainabilityisparticularlypertinent.Thepaperarguesthaturbantransitionisinevitable.Therearethreedimensionsinur

8、bantransition:(1)tomodifytheeconomicgrowthmodelsoastokeeprapidyethealthyeconomicdevelopment;(2)toconstructandstrengthenpublicservicesinstitutions,withtheviewtopromotingharmonioussocialdevelopment;and(3)toimproveenvironmentandtoemphasize
