6、girls(oneofPolishbackgroundandoneofPunjabiSikhbackground)differentiallyengageindisputes.DisputesappearedtoprovidethePolishchildwithoccasionstonegotiatenewmeaningsortonegotiateordisplayherpowerfulpositioninrelationtoclassmates.Bycontrast,thePunjabiSikhgirl
7、wasoftenbestedindisputes,andthustheywereoccasionsonwhichherpowerandcompetenceweredisplayedassubordinatetothoseofotherchildren.Heropportunitiesforparticipationinactivitiesandconversa-tionsinherclassroomseemedconcomitantlyreduced.Thearticlearguesthatteacher
