4、oubeginhands-onwork.Checkwithyoursupervisorifyouareunsureaboutanything,especiallyifyouarenotsuretherisksofthechemicalcanbeadequatelycontrolled.2.Lookforspecificwarningphrasessuchas“TOXIC”,“HIGHLYTOXIC”,“EXTREMELYTOXIC”,“CARCINOGENIC”,“MUTAGENIC”,“TERATOGENIC”.3.
5、Exposuretotoxicchemicalsbyskincontact,inhalation,oringestionmayleadtoimmediate(acute)toxiceffects,delayed(chronic)toxiceffects,orsensitisation(allergicreaction).Itisimportanttorealisethattoxiceffectsmayonlyappearafteralongperiodofexposuretothechemical.4.Toxicche
6、micalsmayalsohaveotherhazardouspropertiessuchas“flammable”,“oxidiser”,“corrosive”,etc–thesepropertiesshouldalsobetakenintoaccountwhenstoring/usingchemicals.5.Manipulationoftoxicchemicalsshouldbecarriedoutinaworkingfumehoodwheneverpossible.Accesstosafetyshowerand
7、eyewashmustbeavailableincloseproximity.Familiariseyourselfwiththelocationsoftheshowerandeyewash*before*youstartworkwithtoxicsubstances.6.Verytoxicsubstances(scheduledsubstances)ordrugs(S4,S3)needtobekeptlockedup,andaccesstotheserestrictedsuchthatthegeneralpublic
