2、idsbehavewhenatrestandwheninmotion.Theimportanceoffluidmechanicsisseenallaroundus,inoureverydaylife.Thedeliveryofwatertohousesandcitiesisgovernedbythemovementofafluid(water)inpipes.Thewaterispumpedalongthepipesandrequiresengineerstobeabletoadjustandcalculateflowratesanduseflowmeter
3、s.Waterinthereservoirsordams,thatisthesourceformuchofthewaterinpipelines,producesaforceondamembankments,whichengineershavetoaccountforinthedesignoftheselargeconcretestructures.Fluidmechanicsdoesnotjustdealwiththeflowofwaterintoourhousesandbusinesses.Aircraftrequirefueltobepumpedint
4、otheirenginesandotherfluidsareneededtotravelaroundtheaircraft.Fluidmechanicsgovernshowairflowsoverandaroundwingsandtheoutsideofaircraft,aswellasthroughcabinairdistributionsystem.Carshavefluidsystemsinthem,andofcoursetheaerodynamicdesignofacarwillmakeitmovethroughtheairmoreefficient
5、lyanduselessfuel.Fluidmechanicsgovernsthemovementoflargeexpansesofwaterinlakesandoceans,themovementofsedimentinrivers,themovementofwaterinmachinerysuchaspumps,turbinesandevenwashingmachines,aswellastheairthroughjetengines,buildingventilationsystemsandevenatmosphericwinds.Atthesmall
6、estscale,fluidmechanicsandinstrumentationiscrucialinmedicaldevices,suchasmedicalpumps,atmosphericdetectors,pregnancytestingkitsandmicro-thrustersforspacebasedsatellites.Insummaryfluidmechanicsisacriticalcomponentofengineeringanditisimportantthatyouasyoungengineersareabletocarryouts
7、omebasicfluidmechanicscalculations.Thiscourseisdesignedtoprovideyouwithanopportunitytostudythebasicfundamentalprinciplesoffluidmechanics.Whilstwewillonlybelookingatsomeoftheintroductoryconceptsoffluidmechanicsinthiscourse,thesebasicprincipleswillenableyoutosuccessfullyenterlevel5of
