2、ock113,protestedvigorously.Aftersomeinconclusivetalksbetweenthetwocountries,theoilrigwithdrew.Aboutayearlater,VietnamagaincomplainedwhenaChineseexplorationshipandtwoarmed®shingboatssailedneartheSpratlyIslands.1Thesevesselsalsowithdrewwithoutincident.Somehaveassertedt
3、hateventssuchastheseªhaveshownaconsis-tentmotivation:agrowingdesperationbyBeijingtocontrolthepotentiallylucrative[energy]resourcesoftheregionºÐsuggestingthatChinamightforciblyappropriateenergyresourcesinthefuture.Tobesure,previousdisputesintheParacelandSpratlyIslands
4、in1974and1988producedbriefarmedclashes.Butiftheseizureofenergyresourceswereahighpriority,thenitissomewhatsurprisingthatChinafailedtotakegreateractionduringtheAsian®nancialcrisisinlate1997and1998,consideringitsrelativemilitarystrengthandSoutheastAsia'seconomicandpolit
