5、oneessentialpartofthefoundationonwhichourfreeInstitutionsrest,teachustoveneratethecharacterofourancestors,andpointoutsomeofthemostimportantdutieswhichweowetopos-terity.ThesystemofeducationnowprevalentinNew-Englandistheoffspringofthepersonalcharac-terandoftheci
6、vilandreligiouspolityofthefirstsettlers.Togivethereforethehistoryofeduca-tioninaparticularState,wemustreverttotheoriginalsettlersandascertainthemotiveswhichgovernedthem.Ifthenweask,first,whatinducedthePuri-tansinHolland5andnext,what,thoseinEng-landoftheMassach
7、usettscolony,toemigratetothiscountry—theanswerisone.Itwaschieflytoenjoyandpropagatetheirreligion5butnexttothisandsubsidiarytoit,itivastoeducatetheirchildren.OnereasonwhichdeterminedthePu-ritanpilgrimsuponaremovalfromLeydenwas;*thattheplacebeingofgreatlicentiou
