2、SITYMay2012ABSTRACTMydissertationproject,MormonsattheWorld'sFair:AStudyofReligiousandCulturalAgencyandTransformationlooksatapivotalperiodoftransitionwithintheAmericanreligiousandpoliticalnationalculture(1880-1907).UsingMormonismasanimportantfocalpointofnationalcontroversyandculturalchange,

3、thisdissertationlooksattheinterconnectionsbetweenMormontransitionsandthelargernationaltransformationsthenunderwayinwhathistorianscallthe"progressive"era.Prominentscholarshaverecognizedthe1893World'sFairasanimportantmomentthathelpedinitiatethe"dawning"ofreligiouspluralisminAmerica.Thisnatio

4、nalresponsetoAmericanreligiousdiversity,however,islimitedtoanineteenth-centuryhistoriographicalframework,whichmaderealreligiouspluralisminthenextcenturymoredifficult.Bringingtogetherintoonenarrativethestoryoftheanti-polygamycrusadesofthe1880s,theambivalentpresence(andnonpresence)ofMormonis

5、mattheWorld'sFairof1893,andthedrawn-outUSSenateHearingsandultimatevictoryofMormonapostleandSenatorReedSmootin1907,thisdissertationoffersnewinsightsintothemeaningandlimitationsofAmericanreligiousliberty,thedynamicsofminorityagency,aswellasadeeperunderstandingofAmerica'sdevelopingnationalide
