2、becorrected,andmorereliableζ-potentialdatacanbeobtained.Tosimulatetheelectroosmoticeffect,thefiniteelementmethodsoftwareCOMSOL™wasused.ThesystemwasstudiedasafunctionofpHandtemperature.Experimentalelectrophoreticdatawasusedforcorrectionusingthemodelingresults.Preliminaryresultsindicatethatt

3、hedatafromthesimulationisbeingunderestimatedbyasmuchasoneorderofmagnitudeascomparedtotheavailableanalyticalsolution.Theproblemneedsfurtherstudy.1.LiteratureReviewWhenmaterialscomeincontactwithaqueoussolutionstheirsurfacebecomeelectricallycharged;thissurfacechargecreateswhatiscalledtheelect

4、ricaldoublelayer(EDL).AmongthepossiblereasonsfortheEDLformationwecanmentionspecificadsorptionofchargedionicspeciesandprotolysisofdissociablegroupsonthesurface[1].TheEDLisconceptualizedasalayeroftightlybounded(immobile)speciesfollowedbyalayeroflooselybounded(diffused)species[2].Theelectricp

5、otentialattheboundaryofthediffusedlayerandthebulkofthesolution(shearplane)isknownasthezetapotential(ζ-potential)[3].Consequently,theEDL(andthereforetheζ-potential)isresponsibleformanyofthepropertiesandinteractionsofchargedspeciesinaqueoussolutions.Manytechniqueshavebeendevelopedbytakingadv

6、antageofelectrokineticphenomenasuchaselectrophoresisandelectroosmosis.First,electrophoresisisoneoftheelectrokineticphenomenainwhichchargedparticles(e.g.,ions,molecules,etc)moveundertheinfluenceofanappliedelectricfield[4].Variationsofelectrophoreticmethodshavebeencreatedfordifferentapplicat

7、ions[5].AmongtheseapplicationswefindproteinseparationandDNAmigrationstudies[6],hydraulicstudiesinsoils[7],andcontaminantdetectioninsoilsandwaters[8].Second,electroosmosisisalmostadirectconsequenceofelectrophoresis.AttheEDLofthecapillarywall,thespeciesinthediff
