4、tsofearliercompilationsofmonographs,toproduceaworthysuccessortoBozorth'sclassicalandmonumentalbookFerro-magnetism.ItismainlyforthisreasonthatFerromagneticMaterialswaschosenastitlefortheHandbookseries,althoughthelatteraimsatgivingamorecompletecross-sectionofmagnetismthanBozorth
5、'sbook.Hereonehastorealizethatmanyofthepresentspecializedareasofmagnetismwerenon-existentwhenBozorth'sbookwasfirstpublished.Furthermore,acomprehensibledescriptionofthepropertiesofmanymagneticallyorderedmaterialscanhardlybegivenwithoutconsidering,forinstance,narrow-bandphenomen
6、a,crystal-fieldeffectsortheresultsofband-structurecalculations.Forthisreason,PeterWohlfarthandIconsidereditdesirablethattheHandbookseriesbecomposedofarticlesthatwouldallowthereaderstoorientthemselvesmorebroadlyinthefieldofmagnetism,takingtheriskthatthetitleoftheHandbookseriesm
