2、abledegreesofconventionalisation,therebygivingrisetoarangeofphenomenaalongeithersideofthesemantics/pragmaticsdistinction.Examiningspecificallycasesofmetonymy,Iproposeapragmaticaccountofcreative,one-offmetonymicexpressionsusingtheframeworkofrelevancetheory;mymainargumentisthatme

3、tonymyisavarietyoftheinterpretiveuseoflanguage.Ifurtherlookatdegreesofconventionalisationthatagivenmetonymymaygothroughuntilitbecomesfullysemanticised,thusbringingaboutsemanticchange.Mydiscussionshouldhavefar-reachingimplicationsforlexicalsemanticsandtherelevance-theoreticdisti

6、ayfromtheideathatnon-literallanguageconstitutesadeparturefromalinguisticnorm;atthesametimeithasproducedawayofaccountingfortheproductivity,spontaneityandeaseofunderstandingoftropesinavarietyoflanguagesandcultures.Aquestionthatisnotfrequentlyaddressedintheliteratureisthedegreetow
