2、ember,IEEE(InvitedPaper)Abstract—Wedescribeamethodtoestimatethecapacitylimitandpracticalinterests[1][4].Suchalimitisreferredtoastheoffiber-opticcommunicationsystems(or“fiberchannels”)basedchannelcapacityandtheprocessofevaluatingthislimitleadstooninform
3、ationtheory.Thispaperisdividedintotwoparts.Partabetterunderstandingofthetechnologiesneededtoapproach1reviewsfundamentalconceptsofdigitalcommunicationsandit.informationtheory.Wetreatdigitizationandmodulationfol-lowedbyinformationtheoryforchannelsbothw
4、ithoutandwithCapacityevaluationsrequireinformationtheory[1]thatmustmemory.Weprovideexplicitrelationshipsbetweenthecommonlybeadaptedtothespecificcharacteristicsofthechannelunderusedsignal-to-noiseratioandtheopticalsignal-to-noiseratio.Westudy.Apragmati
5、capproachistodefinethechannelasthatpartfurtherevaluatetheperformanceofmodulationconstellationsofacommunicationsystemthatthedesignerisunableorun-suchasquadrature-amplitudemodulation,combinationsofam-willingtochange[5],[6].Usingthisapproach,capacityeval
6、u-plitude-shiftkeyingandphase-shiftkeying,exoticconstellations,ationshavebeenperformedforavarietyofphysicalmediasuchandconcentricringsforanadditivewhiteGaussiannoisechannelusingcoherentdetection.Part2isdevotedspecificallytothe‘‘fiberastwisted-paircoppe
7、rcables[7][10],coaxialcables[9],[11],channel.’’Wereviewthephysicalphenomenapresentintrans-wireless[12][15],andsatellitecommunications[16][18],re-missionoveropticalfibernetworks,includingsourcesofnoise,thespectively.ThegoalofPart1ofthispaperistointrodu
8、cebasicneedforopticalfilteringinoptically-routednetworks,and,mostconceptsforevaluatingchannelcapacities.Werefertothesecritically,thepresenceoffiberKerrnonlinearity.Wedescribetoolsinthesecondpartofthepaperwhereweevaluatetheca-varioustransmissionscenario
