3、fBuddhism.Butthatisnotall.Thereisalsoaboundlessjoy.Forexample,lookatthegarish“laughingBuddha”statuesthatgreetyouattheentrancetoChineserestaurantsworldwide,orbetteryet,atthefineinkpaintingsdepictingthelegendaryHanshan[Kanzan寒山eccentricChinese“ColdMountain”monk].Calmnessandjoymightevense
4、emconflictingattitudes:ifreallycalm,you’renotjoyful;ifjoyful,you’renotcalm.Yetthesetwo–andmuchmore–areclearlyexpressedinfineBuddhistsculpture,painting,andsoon.Fromwheredoesthisboundlesscalmandthisboundlessjoyarise?Theseconcretedepictionsinwood,metaloronpaperareactuallyabstractembodimen

6、lyunfold.Othersspeakofitasawillfulstrivingtobreakthroughtoajoyousenlightenment.LikeapoorlymadeBuddhaimage,suchdescriptionspresentmerelyonefacetinadistortedmanner.Zenpracticeisnotwillfulstriving.Youwillnevergettherebymerewillpower.Infact,youdonotneedmoreenergythanyounowhave.Youdoneedtof
