2、iveprominencetothosepartsofthespokentextthatthespeakerconsiderstobeimportant.Thus,prosodicelementsareessentialcuesforthelistenerwhenprocessingspokeninput(cf.Cutler1983:91).Prosodycanalsobeanindicatorofthemental-cognitiveprocessesunderlyingspeechproduction(cf.Goldman-Eisler1958:74).Th

3、eprosodicfeatureofintonation–whichisdefinedaspitchmovementduetochangesoffundamentalfrequency(F0)duringoralspeechproduction(cf.e.g.2Cruttenden1997:7,Günther1999:62;Schönherr1997:12,footnote4)–hasanimportantroletoplayinstructuringandorganizingcommunicativeinteraction.Intonationisusedto

4、indicatethatthespeakerwillgoonspeakingorthatfurtherelementswillfollow(cf.Jin1990:123ff.;Selting1995:50ff.).Intonationhasalsoasocialfunctionwhichdependsonthespeaker’ssocialstatusorprofession:e.g.priestscaneasilybedistinguishedfromotherprofessionsbythewaytheyspeak(cf.FiukowskiandPtok19

5、96:670ff.).Prosodyinbilingualoralcommunicationviaaninterpreterisasimportantasinmonolingualcommunicativeevents.Prosodicelementsinthesourcetext(ST)conveymeaningthatistoberenderedinthetargetlanguage(cf.Kade1963:19),andsincethetargettext(TT)isproducedorally,itsprosodicfeaturesareequallyi

6、mportantfortheTT’saddressee.Thisaspectwasmentionedinearlycontributionsonsimultaneousorconsecutiveinterpreting,butwasnotfurtherdevelopedorconsideredininterpretingstudiesforalongtime.2.Prosodyinsimultaneousinterpreting–thestateoftheartInterpretersareprofessionalspeakersandthereisnodoub
