2、tificprocess.WewillbedoingthisbyexamininganumberoftheoriesthathavebeeninfluentialinthefieldofPsychology.Theprimarygoalofthecourseistodevelopanunderstandingofwhattheoriesare,thefunctionstheyserveinscience,tolearnhowtoevaluatetheories,andhowtheorytestingoccurs.Inaddition,thecoursewillprovi

3、dedetailedknowledgeaboutsomeofthemajortheoriesinPsychology,andtheimpacttheyhavehadinthefield.Becauseamajoraimofthiscourseistodevelopskillsanalyzingandevaluatingtheories,itwillinvolveanactiverolefromstudents.Forthefirstclasswewilltalkaboutsomeofthegeneralissueswewillneedtothinkabout(Whati

4、satheory?Whatmakesagoodtheory?),andthenwewillstartcoveringthespecifictheories.Discussionofthetheorieswillhappenintwoparts.Inthefirsthalfoftheclasswewillgooverwhat,exactly,thetheoryissaying,andwewillevaluatethetheory.Thisportionoftheclasswillbemorediscussion-oriented.Iwanttoencourageyouto

5、havereadaboutthetheory,andbereadytodiscusswhatyouseeasstrengthsandweaknessesofthetheory.InthesecondhalfoftheclassIwilltalkabouttheimpactthetheoryhashadinPsychology,bothappliedandintermsofresearch.Readings:Thereadingswillbeavailableina“coursepack”,availableatthe“InPrint”storeatWestern..Ev

6、aluation:Therewillbetwoexaminationseachworth40%ofthecoursemark.Theexamswillbeacombinationofmultiplechoiceandessayquestions.Inadditiontherewillbeapaperworth20%ofthecoursegrade(10pagemaximum)thatwillinvolvediscussingandevaluatingoneofthetheories.Thesewillbeassigned/chosenatthebeginningofth

7、eyear.Thepaperwillbedueatthebeginningoftheclassdiscussingthattheory(e.g.,ifyouaredoingFreudyourpaperisdueJan.31).Thepaperwillhavetwoparts.Thefirstwillbeyourevaluationofthetheory.Indoingthisyoushouldusethecriteriaforevaluatingtheoriesthatwewilldiscussinthefirstclasses.Thes
