2、y,2004126ABSTRACTThepurposeofthisstudywastocomparetemperaturephasedandtemperaturestagedanaerobicdigestiontoconventionalmesophilicanaerobicdigestionintermsofsolidsdestruction,biomassactivity,andpathogeninactivation.Previousstudieshaveestablishedthattemperatureph
3、asedanaerobicdigestion(TPAD)mayproducemoremethane,destroyvolatilesolids,andinactivatepathogenicmicroorganismsmorecompletelythancomparableconventionalmesophilicdigestion.Alsopreviousstudiesshowedthatbatch-stagedtemperatureanaerobicdigestion(B-STAD)andanaerobicdi
4、gestionelutriatedphasedtreatment(ADEPT)canproducelowervolatilefattyacids(VFA)concentrationsintheeffluent.ThestudyreportedhereinalsoprovidesinformationonnutrientadditioneffectsoneffluentVFAconcentrationsandbiomassactivity.Theconventionalmesophilic,TPAD,B-STAD,an
5、dADEPTpilotdigestersoperatedforthisstudywereeachfedonceadayand,therefore,receivedadailyslugdoseoffeed.Thishadtheadvantageofholdingallparticlesofsludgefor24hoursat55oC.However,thedailyslugfeedingtypicallyresultedinelevatedvolatilefattyacidconcentrations,especial
6、lyinthethermophilicdigester.Eachsystemhadatotalactivevolumeof24litersandwasoperatedata15dayhydraulicretentiontime(HRT).Thesingle-phaseconventionalanaerobicdigestionsystemwasoperatedundermesophilicconditions.TheTPADsystemconsistedofan8-literthermophilicreactorfo
7、llowedbya16-litermesophilicreactor.TheB-STADsystemconsistedofthesamereactorsusedintheTPAD126systembutconfiguredtorecycleeffluentfromthemesophilicreactortothethermophilicreactor.TheADEPTsystemconsistedofa16-literthermophilicreactorfollowedbyan8-litermesophilicre
