2、assagesfromSketchesfromMemoryshowthatHawthornehadvisitedthemountainsinoneofhisoccasionalramblesfromhome,buttherearenoentriesinhisNoteBookswhichgiveaccountsofsuchavisit.Thereis,however,amongthesenotesthefollowinginterestingparagraph,writtenin1840andclearlyfor
3、eshadowingTheGreatStoneFace:'Thesemblanceofahumanfacetobeformedonthesideofamountain,orinthefractureofasmallstone,byalususnaturae[freakofnature].Thefaceisanobjectofcuriosityforyearsorcenturies,andbyandbyaboyisbornwhosefeaturesgraduallyassumetheaspectofthatpor
4、trait.Atsomecriticaljuncturetheresemblanceisfoundtobeperfect.Aprophecymaybeconnected.'ItisnotimpossiblethatthisconceitoccurredtoHawthornebeforehehadhimselfseentheOldManoftheMountain,ortheProfile,intheFranconiaNotchwhichisgenerallyassociatedinthemindsofreader
5、swithTheGreatStoneFace.InTheAmbitiousGuesthehasmadeuseoftheincidentstilltoldtotravellersthroughtheNotch,ofthedestructionoftheWilleyfamilyinAugust,1826.Thehouseoccupiedbythefamilywasontheslopeofamountain,andafteralongdroughttherewasaterribletempestwhichnotonl
6、yraisedtherivertoagreatheightbutloosenedthesurfaceofthemountainsothatagreatlandslidetookplace.Thehousewasinthetrackoftheslide,andthefamilyrushedoutofdoors.Hadtheyremainedwithintheywouldhavebeensafe,foraledgeabovethehousepartedtheavalanchesothatitwasdivertedi
