4、ngontheeffectsofwarfareandofprophesyingallmannerofnovelrebirths.Butitmaybewellforustorememberthattheerawhichhasrecentlyclosedwasitselfmarkedbyamadidealisationofallnovelties.Intheliterarymovementsofthelastdecade--when,indeed,anymovementatallhasbeenperceptibl
5、e--wehavewitnessedabewilderingriseandfallofmethodsandideals.Wewerecaptivatedforatimebythequestofthegoldenphraseandtheaccompanyingcultivationofexoticemotions;andthen,wearyingoftheprettyandthetemperamental,weplungedintothebloodshotbrutalitiesofnaturalism.From
6、thesmooth-flowingimitationsofTennysonandSwinburne,wepassedintoafalsefreedomthathadatitsheartarepudiationofalllawandstandards,foraparalleltowhichoneturnsinstinctivelytocertainrecentdevelopmentsinthepoliticalworld.Wemayhopethattheeagersearchfornoveltyofforman
7、dsubjectmayhaveitsinfluenceinreleasingusfromouroldbondagetothecommonplaceandinbroadeningthescopeofpoetry;butwecannotblindourselvestothefactthatithasatthesametimecompletedthatestrangementbetweenthepoetandthegeneralpublicwhichhasbeendevelopingforhalfacentury.
