2、reCollege,Cambridge.Whenabouttwenty-fouryearsold,hehadobtainedacollegefellowship,hadtakenthedegreeofMasterofArts,andwasordainedPriestoftheRomanChurchatLincoln.In1524,attheageofaboutthirty,heproceededtothedegreeofB.D.,andontheoccasionofhisdoingsohearguedpubliclyforthePope'sauthorityagainstopinionsof
3、Melancthon.ThomasBilneywentafterwardstoLatimer'srooms,gavehimhisownreasonsforgoodwilltotheteachingofMelancthon,andexplainedtohimhisfaithasaReformerinawaythatsecuredLatimer'sattention.Latimer'sfree,vigorousmind,admittedthenewreasonings,andinhisafter-lifehelookedalwaysupon"littleBilney"asthemanwhohad
4、firstopenedhiseyes.WithhomelyearnestnessLatimerbegansoontoexpresshisnewconvictions.HiszealandpurityoflifehadcausedhimtobetrustedbytheUniversityasamaintainerofoldways;hehadbeenappointedcross-bearertotheUniversity,andelectedoneofthetwelvepreachersannuallyappointedinobediencetoabullofPopeAlexanderVI.N
5、owLatimerwalkedandworkedwithBilney,visitingthesickandtheprisoners,andreasoningtogetheroftheneedsofChristendom.TheBishopofthediocesepresentlyforbadeLatimer'spreachinginanyofthepulpitsoftheUniversity.RobertBarnes,prioroftheAugustinianFriarsatCambridge,amanstirredtothedepthsbythenewmovementofthought,t
6、heninvitedLatimertopreachinthechurchoftheAugustinians.LatimerwasnextsummonedbeforeWolsey,whomhesatisfiedsowellthatWolseyoverruledtheBishop'sinhibition,andLatimeragainbecameafreepreacherinCambridge.TheinfluenceofLatimer'spreachingbecameeveryyeargreater;andinDecember,1529,hegaveoccasiontonewcontrover
