3、roblemareas,namelyroutinganddesign.Insensornet-worksinwhichthenodesusemulti-hopcommunication,routingisamajorissue.Theroutingprobleminthecontextofsensornetworkre-tainssomeofthefeaturesoftheroutingprobleminad-hocnetworks,butalsohassomespeci ccharacteristicstoit,inparticularwithre-specttodata-
4、aggregation,addressing,andthemany-to-oneparadigm(eachsensornodewantingtosendthecollecteddatatoasinglebase-station).We rstdiscusstheworkdoneonenergyecientrouting,andthecorrespondingoptimizationproblemsformaximizingthelifetimeofthenetwork.Wethendiscusssomeoftheoptimizationproblemsinthedesign
5、anddimensioningofsensornetworks.Sincemostpotentialapplicationsenvisionedforsensornetworksrequirehighnodedensity,nodeheterogeneityandhierarchicalclusteringcouldbeusedforbetterscalabilityoftheprotocols.Wediscusstheresultsobtainedonenergy2andcostminimizationproblemsinthecontextofsuchclustereds
