2、mwindandwaterProtectsoilandwaterqualityManagepestpopulationsProvidewildlifefoodandcoverandpollinatorhabitatIncreasecarbonstorageImproveairqualityCONDITIONSWHEREPRACTICEAPPLIESThispracticeisappliedaroundtheperimeteroffields.Itsusecansupportorconnectotherbufferpracticeswithinandbetweenfiel

3、ds.Thispracticemayalsoapplytorecreationlandorotherlanduseswhereagronomiccropsincludingforagesaregrown.CRITERIAGeneralCriteriaApplicabletoAllPurposesFieldbordersshallbeestablishedaroundthefieldedgestotheextentneededtomeettheresourceneedsandproducerobjectives.Minimumfieldborderwidthsshallb

4、ebasedonlocaldesigncriteriaspecifictothepurposeorpurposesforinstallingthepractice.Minimumfieldborderwidthsareatleast20feetwide,exceptwhenthepracticeisappliedtoprovidewildlifehabitat,whenthewidthisatleast30feetwide.Thefieldbordersshallbeestablishedtoadaptedspeciesofpermanentgrass,legumesa

5、nd/orshrubsthataccomplishthedesignobjectiveanddonotfunctionashostfordiseasesofthefieldcrop.Plantsselectedforfieldborderswillhavethephysicalcharacteristicsnecessarytocontrolwindandwatererosiontotolerablelevelsonthefieldborderarea.Seedbedpreparation,seedingrates,dates,depths,fertilityrequi

6、rements,andplantingmethodswillbeconsistentwithapprovedlocalcriteriaandsiteconditions.Ephemeralgulliesandrillspresentintheplannedborderareawillbeeliminatedaspartofseedbedpreparation.Ifpresent,ephemeralgulliesandrillslocatedimmediatelyupslopefromtheplannedborderareaneedtobetreatedtoensurem
