3、ndfivemembersunder20.Thisisthetypical,new,middle-classfaceofbrassbands.Yettheirlinkstoabygoneminingtraditionpersist. Twenty-fiveyearsafterbrassbandsmarchedduringtheminers’strike,thisundergroundmusicisinthespotlightagain.Anewcompilation,TheMusicLivesonNowtheMin
4、esHaveGone,brings11collierybandstogether,includingCarltonMain.Theywilllineupagainstanothercollierybrassalbum,bytheDinningtonCollieryBand,fromSheffield,thestarsoftheBBCshowABandforBritain,whichfollowsSuePerkins’seffortstosaveDinnington.Andnextmonth,theLeeds-base
5、dOperaNorthcommemoratestheyear-longminers’strikewithSongsattheYear’sEnd,asongcycleforbrassband. Butwhatfuturedothesehistoricgroupshave?Mostbrassbandstodayhaveoutlivedtheirminingcommunities,andtheeffectsareprofound.Whencollieriesandtheirbandsweretheheartofaclos
6、e-knit,thrivingvillage,bandsplayedforpleasureandpride. TheYorkshire-bornStanLippeatt,60,isaformerGrimethorpebandsmanwhostartedplayingwhenhewas10yearsold.Hisfatherplayed,sodidhisgrandfathers,hisunclesandhistwobrothers.“Bandsbecamethepillarsofthevillage;theyturn
7、edouttomarchonArmisticeSunday,theywouldplaytheChristmascarols.Theyweresomethingforvillagerstogotowhentherewasn’tmuchTVabout,”hesays.LippeattfoundedtheannualButlinsMineworkersOpenBrassBandChampionships.“AguywouldbeonhisholidaysinTorquayandhe’dbeproudtoboasthecam
