2、.andMrs.AriWoodruff,alsoofWyandotte.TheSoroptomistClubofWyandotteextendedaninvitationforthefirstmeetingwhichwasheldattheCityHallDecember8,1953.SteveQuirkwentdoor-to-dooraskingparents,whosenameshehadacquired,toattend.Somedoorswereslammedinhisface.However,
3、thefirstmeetingwasasuccess,andofficersofthenewlyfoundedorganizationwereelected.StephenQuirkwaselectedasthefirstPresident;FredDurchman,Vice-President:AriWoodruff,TreasurerandEvelynPelley,Secretary.TheydecidedtocallthenewgrouptheDownriverAssociationforMent
4、allyRetardedChildren.ThiswaslatershortenedtotheDownriverAssociationforRetardedChildren,beforechangingtotheAssociationforRetardedCitizens/Downriverasweknowittoday.StephenQuirkwasresponsiblefortheearlyprogressthegroupmade.HisdedicationenabledtheAssociation
5、togrowduringitsbeginningyears.Subsequentmeetingshadspeakers,andtheparentssharedtheirmistakesandsuccesseswithraisingtheirchildren.Themembersdecidedtohavemonthlyduesoftwenty-fivecentstoprovidefundsforpaper,postage,books,andothersupplies.Aconstitutionwasals
6、oagreeduponandadopted.Civicgroupswereapproachedfortheirsupport.TheSoroptomistClubofWyandotte,undertheleadershipofEvelynNavarre,offeredtosponsorthenewgroup.TheywereoneoftheAssociation'smostsolidfinancialandmoralbackersintheearlyyears.WhiletheDownriverAsso
7、ciationwasestablishingits’beginning,sowerehundredsofotherparentsinotherstatesacrossthecountryforminglocalassociations.Tonamethetimeandplaceofthebeginningofthismovementwouldbeliketryingtoisolatethefirstgrowthofgrass.Fortrulythisisagrassrootsmovement.Small
