3、tandfocalretractionordistortionattheedgeoftheparenchyma．Architectrualdistortionisasubtleabnormalityinmammograms，andasourceofoverlookingerrorsbyradiologists．Computer-aideddiagnosis(CAD)techniquesCanimprovetheperfmanceofradiologistsindetectingmassesandcalcifications；however,mostCADsystemsha

4、venotbeendesignedtodetectarchitecturaldistortion．Inthisdissertation，wepresentatechniquetocharacterizearchitecturaldistortioninmommograms．Thebreastcontainsseveralpiecewiselinearstructures，suchasligaments，ducts，andbloodvessels，thatcausedirectionallyorientedtextureinmammograms．Wepresentanewm

5、ethodtodetectandlocalizearchitecturaldistortionbyanalyzingtheorientedtextureinmammograms．AbankofGaborfiltersisusedtoobtaintheorientationfieldofthegivenmammogram．Theorientationfieldisfilteredanddownsampled，toreducenoiseandalsotoreducetheburdenofcalculation．Thedownsampledorientationfieldisa

6、nalyzedtoproducethreephaseportraitmaps：node，saddleandspiral．Thenthreephaseportraitmapsarethresholdedandmorphologicallyfilteredtodetectarchitecturaldistortion．AtlastthedetectingresultshadbeenvalidatedandevaluatedbymammogramsfromthetumorhospitalofLiaoningprovinceandthetumorhospitalofTianjin
