3、sbegantoemergeamidstanincreasinglyglobalizednation.Inthewakeofsocio-economicchangesfollowingtheendoftheCulturalRevolution,artistsbegantoestablishvillagesinruralareasforreasonsincludinglowhousingcostsandgreaterartisticfreedom.Scatteredaroundtheoutskirtsofcities,thesebohemianar

4、tistcoloniesconsistedofthousandsofcontemporaryartistslivingandworkinginasharedspace.Itwasintheseplacesthatlike-minded,freespiritshadtheabilitytoexpressthemselvesandcreateastoundingworksofcontemporaryart.OwingtoChina’spost-reformdesiretofortifythecountry’sglobalimageintheearly

5、2000’s,thegovernmentrecognizedthesocialandeconomicbenefittheseartistvillagescouldprovidetothestateandthusbegantoencouragethedevelopmentofwhat’scalled“CulturalCreativeIndustryParks”—acomplicatedsystemthroughwhichcontrolandmanagementofthesedistrictswaslargelytransferredtothesta

6、te.ThesechangesareseenmostdistinctlyinthedevelopmentofBeijing’s798DistrictandSongzhuangArtistVillage.WiththehopesofincreasingChina’sculturaldiplomacyandtourism,thecityofBeijingcapitalizedonthecreativenatureoftheseartistvillagesbyencouragingrealestatedevelopmentandcommercializ

7、ation.Manyarguethattheurbanizationof798DistrictandSongzhuanghasencouragedrampantgentrification,andhasallowedthegovernmenttomorecloselymonitortheproductionofarts—therebythreateningthecreativeauthenticityofthevillagesandtheartisticspiritoftheartists.Iarguethattheinvolvementofth
