3、ather'sextensivelibraryprovidedmaterialfortheshortsatiricalsketchesshewroteasagirl.Attheageof14shewroteherfirstnovel,LoveandFriendshipandthenAHistoryofEnglandbyapartial,prejudicedandignorantHistirian.togetherwithotherveryamusingJuvenilia.InhertwentiesJaneAustenwrotethen
4、ovelsthatwerelatertobere-workedandpublishedasSenseandSensibility,PrideandPrejudice,andNorthangerAbbey.Afterherfather^deathin1805,theyallsufferedfinancialdifficultiesandwereforcedtorelyonthecharityoftheAustensons.Itwasalsoatthattime,whileonholidayintheWestcountry,Janefel
5、linlove,andwhentheyoungmandied,shewasdeeplyupset.LatersheacceptedaproposalofmarriagefromHarrisBigg-Wither,awealthylandownerandbrothertosomeofherclosestfriends,butshechangedhermindthenextmorningandwasgreatlyupsetbythewholeepisode.Shenevermarried.Then,inJuly,1809,herbroth
6、erEdwardofferedhismotherandsistersapermanenthomeonhisChawtonestate,whichwasasmallbutcomfortablehousethatJaneAustenneededinordertowrite.Inthesevenandahalfyearsthatshelivedinthishouse,sherevisedSenseandSensibilityandPrideandPrejudicedandpublishedthem(in1811and1813)andthen
7、embarkedonaperiodofintenseproductivity.MansfiledParkcameoutin1814,followedbyEmmain1816andshecompletedPersuasion(whichwaspublishedtogetherwithNorthangerAbbeyin1818,theyearafterherdeath).Noneofthebookspublishedinherlife-timehadhernameonthem—theyweredescribedasbeingwritten
8、"ByaLady".Inthewinterof1816shestartedSanditem,butillnesspreventeditscompletion.JaneAustenhadcontractedAddisons
