4、e;but,withthepossibleexceptionofonemanwhowasfoundslaininthewoodsin1676,noneoftheinhabitantsweremolested;anditwasnotuntilabouttheyear1689thatthesafetyofthesettlementwasseriouslythreatened.Threepersonswerekilledinthatyear.In1690sixgarrisonswereestablishedin
5、differentpartsofthetown,withasmallcompanyofsoldiersattachedtoeach.Twoofthesehousesarestillstanding.Theywerebuiltofbrick,twostorieshigh,withasingleoutsidedoor,sosmallandnarrowthatbutonepersoncouldenteratatime;thewindowsfew,andonlyabouttwoandahalffeetlongby
6、eighteenincheswide,withthickdiamondglasssecuredwithlead,andcrossedinsidewithbarsofiron.Thebasementhadbuttworooms,andthechamberwasenteredbyaladderinsteadofstairs;sothattheinmates,ifdriventhither,couldcutoffcommunicationwiththeroomsbelow.Manyprivatehouseswe
