3、rently,limitedbythenumberofelectrodes,visualprosthesescanmerelyproviderudimentaryprostheticvisionintheformofdiscretelyspacedphosphenesatthisstage.Anditiscrucialtooptimizetheinformationcontentunderthislowresolution,thatis,tohelptheprosthesesdesignerfindcertainim

4、ageprocessingstrategiesandtogivethepatientsthebestvisualperception.Facialrecognitionisoneofthemostimportantvisualtasksindailylifeandtheprimarygoalwhichvisualprosthesisshouldhelppatientsaccomplished.Formerexperimentusedtheidealfacialimagesasmaterial,thatis,tailo

5、r-madefacialimagesunderwhitebackground,withthefaceoccupyingthewholevisualfield.Whenthedistancegrows,thefacewillnolongerbeoccupyingthewholevisualfieldandthepixelthatusedtoexpressthefaceunderprostheticvisionwilldropimmediately.Thusincreasethedifficultyforthepatie

6、ntsofdetectingfacesandrecognizingthem.TheaimsofthisstudyweretoproposethreedifferentimageprocessingstrategiesbasedonViola–Jonesfacedetectionalgorithm.Usingthreefaceregionextractstrategies,whichwereViola-Jonesfaceregion(VJFR),statisticalfaceregion(SFR)andmattingf

7、aceregion(MFR)tohelpthefacialrecognitionunderprostheticvision.Byperformingpsychophysicalexperiment,theycanbeevaluatedunderdifferentresolutionsandeccentricities.Resultsshowedthatthesethreeimageprocessingstrategiescanraisethefacialrecognitionaccuracyunderprosthet

8、icvisionsignificantly.Undertheresolutionof24×24pixels,therecognitionaccuraciesofMFRandSFRwhichprovidedmorehairinformationwassignificantlyhigherthanthatofVJFR;undertheresolut
