3、ingswhicharemoreknowableandobvioustousandproceedtowardsthosewhichareclearerandmoreknowablebynature;forthesamethingsarenot'knowablerelativelytous'and'knowable'withoutqualification.Sointhepresentinquirywemustfollowthismethodandadvancefromwhatismoreobscurebynature,butcl
4、earertous,towardswhatismoreclearandmoreknowablebynature.Nowwhatistousplainandobviousatfirstisratherconfusedmasses,theelementsandprinciplesofwhichbecomeknowntouslaterbyanalysis.Thuswemustadvancefromgeneralitiestoparticulars;foritisawholethatisbestknowntosense-percepti
5、on,andageneralityisakindofwhole,comprehendingmanythingswithinit,likeparts.Muchthesamethinghappensintherelationofthenametotheformula.Aname,e.g.'round',meansvaguelyasortofwhole:itsdefinitionanalysesthisintoitsparticularsenses.Similarlyachildbeginsbycallingallmen'father
