3、keyfleet;otherssaiditwasbroughtfromCandia;othersfromCyprus.Itmatterednotfromwhenceitcame;butallagreeditwascomeintoHollandagain.Wehadnosuchthingasprintednewspapersinthosedaystospreadrumoursandreportsofthings,andtoimprovethembytheinventionofmen,asIhavelivedtoseepractisedsince.Butsuchthings
4、astheseweregatheredfromthelettersofmerchantsandotherswhocorrespondedabroad,andfromthemwashandedaboutbywordofmouthonly;sothatthingsdidnotspreadinstantlyoverthewholenation,astheydonow.ButitseemsthattheGovernmenthadatrueaccountofit,andseveralcouncilswereheldaboutwaystopreventitscomingover;b
5、utallwaskeptveryprivate.Henceitwasthatthisrumourdiedoffagain,andpeoplebegantoforgetitasathingwewereverylittleconcernedin,andthatwehopedwasnottrue;tillthelatterendofNovemberorthebeginningofDecember1664whentwomen,saidtobeFrenchmen,diedoftheplagueinLongAcre,orratherattheupperendofDruryLane.
6、Thefamilytheywereinendeavouredtoconcealitasmuchaspossible,butasithadgottensomeventinthediscourseoftheneighbourhood,theSecretariesofStategotknowledgeofit;andconcerningthemselvestoinquireaboutit,inordertobecertainofthetruth,twophysiciansandasurgeonwereorderedtogotothehouseandmakeinspection
