2、ingswhichtofire-sidepeopleappearstrangeandromantic,tothemseemascommonplaceasajacketoutatelbows.Yet,notwithstandingthefamiliarityofsailorswithallsortsofcuriousadventure,theincidentsrecordedinthefollowingpageshaveoftenserved,when"spunasayarn,"notonlytorelievethewearinessofmanyanight-watchatsea,
3、buttoexcitethewarmestsympathiesoftheauthor'sshipmates.Hehasbeen,therefore,ledtothinkthathisstorycouldscarcelyfailtointerestthosewhoarelessfamiliarthanthesailorwithalifeofadventure.Inhisaccountofthesingularandinterestingpeopleamongwhomhewasthrown,itwillbeobservedthathechieflytreatsoftheirmoreo
4、bviouspeculiarities;and,indescribingtheircustoms,refrainsinmostcasesfromenteringintoexplanationsconcerningtheiroriginandpurposes.Aswritersoftravelsamongbarbarouscommunitiesaregenerallyverydiffuseonthesesubjects,hedeemsitrighttoadverttowhatmaybeconsideredaculpableomission.Noonecanbemoresensibl
5、ethantheauthorofhisdeficienciesinthisandmanyotherrespects;butwhentheverypeculiarcircumstancesinwhichhewasplacedareunderstood,hefeelsassuredthatalltheseomissionswillbeexcused.Inverymanypublishednarrativesnolittledegreeofattentionisbestowedupondates;butastheauthorlostallknowledgeofthedaysofthew
