3、.Thiswasnottrue,butherfamilywantedabettermarriageforherthanwithCarmichael-Smyth,amilitaryman.Thetruthwasunexpectedlyrevealedin1812,whenRichmondThackerayunwittinglyinvitedtodinnerthesup-posedlydeadCarmichael-Smyth.RichmondThackeray,bornatSouthMimms,wenttoIndiaattheageofsixteentoassumeh
4、isdutiesaswriter.By1804hehadfatheredadaughterbyanativemistress,themotheranddaughterbeingnamedinhiswill.Suchliaisonsbeingcom-monamonggentlemenoftheEastIndiaCompany,itformednobartohiscourtingandmarryingAnneBecher.AfterRichmond'sdeath,HenryCarmichael-SmythmarriedAnnein1818andtheyreturned
5、toEnglandthenextyear.WilliamhadbeensenttoEnglandearlier,attheageoffive,withashortstopoveratSt.HelenawheretheimprisonedNapoleonwaspointedouttohim.HewaseducatedatschoolsinSouthamptonandChiswickandthenatCharterhouseSchool,wherehewasaclosefriendofJohnLeech.HedislikedCharterhouse,parodying
6、itinhislaterfictionas"Slaughterhouse."Illnessinhislastyearthere(duringwhichhere-portedlygrewtohisfullheightof6'3")postponedhismatriculationatTrinityCollege,Cambridge,untilFebruary1829.Nevertookeenonaca-demicstudies,helefttheUniversityin1830.Hetravelledforsometimeonthecontinent,visitin
7、gParisandWeimar,wherehemetGoethe.HereturnedtoEnglandandbegantostudylawattheMiddleTemple,butsoongavethatup.Onreachingtwenty-one,hecameintohisinheritance,buthesquanderedmuchofitongamblingandbyfundingtwounsuc-cessfulnewspapers,TheNationalStandardandTheConstitutional,whichhehadhopedtowrit
