3、ywithflowers--theyseemdulleranddowdierthaneverthen,wearingtheirfadedwinter'sdress,lookingsodingyandoldandworn.Inthemellowdaysofautumn,whenthetrees,likedamesnolongeryoung,seektoforgettheiragedlooksundergorgeousbright-tonedrobesofgoldandbrownandpurple,andthegrainisyellowinthefiel
4、ds,andtheruddyfruithangsclusteringfromthedroopingboughs,andthewoodedhillsintheirthousandhuesstretchedlikeleafyrainbowsabovethevale--ah!surelytheylooktheirdullestanddowdiestthen.Thegatheredgloryofthedyingyearisallaroundthem.Theyseemsooutofplaceamongit,intheirsomber,everlastinggr
5、een,likepoorrelationsatarichman'sfeast.Itissuchaweather-beatenoldgreendress.Somanysummers'sunshaveblisteredit,somanywinters'rainshavebeatuponit--suchashabby,mean,olddress;itistheonlyonetheyhave!Theydonotlookquitesobadwhenthewearywinterweatheriscome,whentheflowersaredead,andtheh
6、edgerowsarebare,andthetreesstandoutleaflessagainstthegraysky,andthebirdsareallsilent,andthefieldsarebrown,andthevineclingsroundthecottageswithskinny,fleshlessarms,andtheyaloneofallthingsareunchanged,theyaloneofalltheforestaregreen,theyaloneofalltheverdanthoststandfirmtofrontthe
