3、aneEyre,threeBrontesisterscausedgreatcuriosityofthereadersandcritics,especiallyEmilyBronte,theauthoressofWutheringHeights,andCharlotteBronte,theauthoressofJaneEyre.Jane’sstruggleforindependenceandherromanticlovewithRochesterandthepassionateandcontroversiallov
4、ebetweenCatherineandHeathcliffhavebeenreviewedformorethan100years.Manycriticshavemadetremendouscontributionstocriticismofthesourcesofthenovels,theirnarrativestylesandcreatingmotivationsaswellastheanalysisoftheprotagonists.Thisthesis,however,focusesontherolesa
5、ndcharacteristicsofservantsinthesetwonovels.Eventhoughservantsareminorcharacters,itdoesn’tfollowthattheyplaynorolesandhavenocharacteristicandthereforecanbeneglected.Althoughtwonovelstellquitedifferentstories,readerscaneasilyfindsomeinterestingandcontroversial
6、imagesoftheservantswhoareinseparablefromthedevelopmentoftheprotagonistsandthewholestories.Whentheyareconfrontedwiththechangeablefateoftheprotagonists,especiallywhenthereisthelackingoftheimageofthemother,theyparticipateintheactions,evenintendingtoinfluencethep
