2、earslater,religionsandtheconceptofGodhavenotgoneawayand,inmanyinstances,appeartobegaininginstrength.Thispaperconsiderstheneuropsychologicalbasisofrelig-ionandreligiousconceptsandtriestodevelopanunderstandingofwhyreligiondoesnotgoawaysoeasily.Ingeneral,religionappearstoservetwom
3、ajorfunctions—itisasystemofself-maintenanceandasystemofself-transcendence.Sincebothofthesefunctionsbeardirectlyonhumansurvivalandadaptability,theneuropsychologicalmechanismsthatunderliereligionsappeartohavebecomethor-oughlyingrainedinthehumangenepoolandultimatelyhumanexperience
4、.Thispaperreviewsthesetwofunctionsofreligionsfromaneuropsychologicalperspectivetotrytoexplainwhyreligioncon-tinuestothrive.Finally,weconsidertheconclusionsregardingreal-ityandepistemologythataneuropsychologicalanalysisofreligiousexperiencesuggests.Keywords:neuroepistemology;neu
