2、n the future.Q: Computers are now widely used for learning English, right?A: Sure. They can be very useful to learn reading, writing, and even some grammar. However, I don't believe they can do much to help improve spoken fluency. I think human communication is
3、very complex and very subtle. Human beings are emotional and often quite illogical, so real communication doesn't follow rules - you couldn't program potential conversations into a piece of software. Q: So can we learn to speak from a book?A: No, I don't think a
4、nyone can learn to speak from a book. Let me be clear: we can use text books to give us vocabulary, introduce topics, etc. This is good. But the only way to learn to speak is by practicing with another human being. I've seen lots of books that claim they can tea
5、ch you to speak English. Some are written by college professors who know all the rules of English grammar, but this is irrelevant. I think you know that my motto is "Learn to speak by speaking". A book can give you ideas but only you can develop the skill of com
6、munication. Software has the same limitations. Q: So, how do you see the future of language learning?A: More and more information, whether it is language or anything else, will migrate towards computers and the internet. There is no question about this. There wi
7、ll be fewer textbooks in the future, because we will have everything stored on computers. Homework will be done by email. The internet is potentially the greatest tool that educators have ever had, so clearly that will be used more and more. However, as I said b
