4、-sevenquestionnairesfortheChinesestudentsare4receivedwheninvaliddata(thoseletterswhichcannotbefinishedorrecognized)areexcluded.Beforewritingtheletters,theteacherexplainsthesesixsituationsinChineseinordertomakestudentclearlyunderstandtheirtask.Enoughtimewillbeallowedinorderto

5、letstudentsfinishthoseletters.  TwentyquestionnairesfortheAmericanstudentsarereceivedasthedataforthisresearch.  2.Dataanalysisanddiscussion  Justliketheoralexpression,theinvestigationshowsthatpragmaticfailuresalsooccurwhenChineseEnglishlearnersexpresstherequestsinthewrittenf

6、orm.TheconceptofpragmaticfailureoriginatesformThomas(1983).Shecommentsthatthepragmaticfailurehasoccurredonanyoccasion“onwhichH(thehearer)perceivestheforcesofS(thespeaker’s)utterancesasotherthanSintendedheorsheperceiveit.”(ibid:94).Accordingtohim,pragmaticfailureisclassifiedi

7、ntotwocategories:pragmalinguisticfailureandsociopragmaticfailure.Theformerone“occurswhenthepragmaticforcemappedbyspeakerontoagivenutteranceissystematicallydifferentfromtheforcemostfrequentlyassignedtoitbynativespeakersofthetargetlanguage”(ibid:99).Andthelatterone“stemsfromcr
