3、andvarietyofcontemporaryAmericanlegalhistory.WepresentascomprehensiveandauthoritativeanaccountaspossibleofthepresentunderstandingandrangeofinterpretationofthehistoryofAmericanlaw.Wesuggestwherefutureresearchmaylead.In1941,HenryLuceofTimeMagazinenamedthetwentiethcentury“theAme
4、ri-canCentury.”ForourpurposesitbeginsafterWorldWarI:thewarwasawatershedthatforeshadowedanewAmericanstateformandrole,confirmedthedominanceofthenewAmericancorporateeconomy,andgaverisetoanewrangeofinternationalambitionsandrelationships.Eacharenasawsuchanintensificationoftheroleofl
5、awthatbyitsend,“theAmericanCenturywasbeingcalled‘Law’sCentury.’”Noteverythingthatseemednewwas,butbyandlargethisfinalvolumeoftheHistoryisaboutacceleratingchange:innovationinthestate,inlegalthoughtandeducation,inprofessionalorganizationandlife,andinAmericanfederalismandgovernanc
6、e;innovationattheintersectionoflawwithexplosivestrugglesaroundrace,gen-der,class,andsexualliberationandthefullemergenceof“rights”discourse,alongwithitslimitationsandblindspots;andthemobilizationof“rights”and“law”to“legalize”theworld.Intheearlytwenty-firstcentury,abouttheonlypr
