5、assistancestrategyforChinaafteritsaccessiontotheWTO.IstartedmyvisittwodaysagointhewesternprovinceofYunnanandhavenowcometoSichuan.IhaveseengoodexamplesofhowtheWorldBankGroupcanofferassistancetotheGovernmentandtheprivatesectortodevelopChina’sWest.Thereare11provinc

6、es,autonomousregionsandonemunicipalityinwestChina,withatotalareaofabout6.8millionsquarekilometersandapopulationof364million.Thegovernment’sdesiretoacceleratethedevelopmentofthewesternprovincesisvitaltothesuccessofachievingasustainedgrowthforChinainthelongrun.The

7、rearealsochallenges,however,thatshouldnotbeoverlooked.Theseincludecontinueeffortstocreateandimprovethebusinessenvironment.ButIamconfidentthatthesechallengeswillbemet.Inclosing,IwouldliketothanktheGovernmentofSichuanforitssupporttotheWorldBankandIFCoperationsinSi
