2、ndtheireffectonasetofstrategicinitiativesalreadyseenasimportanttotheinstitution’sfuture;and2)theoutside-in-approachwheredecisionmakersfirstidentifymajortrendsandfactorsemergingacrosstheenvironmentandthendeterminewhichofthemmaybecriticaltotheinstitution’sfuture.[The
3、PlanningResourceGuide,1999,p.24]SWT’senvironmentalanalysisutilizesbothoftheseapproachesinreviewingpossibleexternalopportunitiesand/orthreatsthatcouldimpactus.Thisreportisdividedintothreeparts—aninternalenvironmentalscanthataddressesauniversityperspectiveofimportant
4、environmentalfactorsimpactinginitiatives,acollectionofexternalenvironmentalimpactfactors,andatraditionalexternalscan.Tocompletetheuniversityperspective,wegatheredinformationfromacademicdepartmentsandcollegesaboutinitiativesandenvironmentalfactorsimpactingthoseiniti
5、ativestoobtainaclearerpictureofinternalandexternalenvironmentalfactorsperceivedasimportanttoacademicdepartmentsandcolleges.Collegesanddepartmentsidentifiedthreeinitiativesalongwiththeinternal(withintheuniversity)andexternalfactorsimpactingthoseinitiatives.Thefirstd
6、raftwasdistributedtoacademicdeansandacademic/administrativevice-presidentstoreviewwithothersintheirdivisionforadditionsanddeletions.Athematicanalysisofinformationreceivedyieldedfourbroadcategories.Theyincludeenrollmentmanagement,externalfunding,programdevelopment,a
7、nduniversityinfrastructure.Theexternalenvironmentalimpactfactorslistisacollectionofdemographicinformationobtainedfrommajorwrittenreports,electronicmedia,andmajorpublications.Thisinformationiscategorizedbylocal,regional,state,andnationaldemographics.Inordertocomplet
