6、sthequintessenceofChinesehorticulture.TheWorldHeritageCommitteereferstoSuzhouasthecradleofhorticultureintheworld.Manyofthesegardens,however,sufferedseriousdamagefromwarsinthelate1930sandearly1940s.The“GardenofLeisure,”forexample,builtin1596withanareaof20,000squaremeters,wasdes
7、troyedbytheJapaneseinvadersandlaterusedasstablesbyKuomintangtroopsinthe1940s.Intheearly1950s,ahugecampaignwaslaunchedtorestorethegardensofSuzhou.ThebestcraftsmenfromalloverChinawerecalledintorestorehistoricaldoors,windows,bricks,tilesandfurnitureaswellascalligraphyandpaintings
