2、ices.Thepotentialtochangehardwareconfigurationinrealtime,tosupportmultipledesignoptionswithasinglemaskset,andtoproduct’susablelife,allcompeldesignerstolookforablendingofhighdensityASICcircuitsalongwiththeinherentFPGAcircuitflexibility.Theabilitytocreatea“basedesign”andthenreusethebasew
3、ithminimalchangesforsubsequentdeviceshelpsreducedesigntimeandencouragesstandardization.Sincemanyconsumerandofficeproductsareofferedwitharangeoflowtohigh-endoptions,thisbasedesignconceptcanbeeffectivelyused-withfeaturesaddedtoeachsuccessivemodel.Printers,faxmachines,PC'sanddigitalimagin
4、gequipmentareexampleswherethisconceptcanbeuseful.DSPapplicationsarealsowellsuitedtoFPGAbecauseoftheFPGAsfastmultiplyandaccumulate(MAC)processingcapability.WhenbuildingaDSPsystem,thedesigncantakeadvantageofparallelstructuresandarithmeticalgorithmstominimizeresourcesandexceedperformanceo
5、fsingleormultiplepurposeDSPdevices.DSPdesignersusingbothASICandFPGAwithinthesamedesigncanoptimizeasystemforperformancebeyondthecapabilitiesofeitherseparatecircuittechnology.OtherapplicationsthatlendthemselvestothehybridASIC/FPGAapproacharedesignsthatsupportmultiplestandardssuchasUSB,Fi
6、reWireandCameraLink,inasingledevice.Similarly,designsthatarefinalized,withtheexceptionofanyundefinedfeaturesoremergingstandards,areexcellentcandidatesforthistechnology.Withoutthebenefitofprogrammablelogic,thedesignermustdecidebetweentaping-outthechipknowingthatthePCIlogichasahighprobab
