2、hepotentialtochangehardwareconfigurationinrealtime,tosupportmultipledesignoptionswithasinglemaskset,andtoproduct’susablelife,allcompeldesignerstolookforablendingofhighdensityASICcircuitsalongwiththeinherentFPGAcircuitflexibility.Theabilitytocreatea“basedesign”andthenreusethebasewithminimalch

3、angesforsubsequentdeviceshelpsreducedesigntimeandencouragesstandardization.Sincemanyconsumerandofficeproductsareofferedwitharangeoflowtohigh-endoptions,thisbasedesignconceptcanbeeffectivelyused-withfeaturesaddedtoeachsuccessivemodel.Printers,faxmachines,PC'sanddigitalimagingequipmentareexamp

4、leswherethisconceptcanbeuseful.DSPapplicationsarealsowellsuitedtoFPGAbecauseoftheFPGAsfastmultiplyandaccumulate(MAC)processingcapability.WhenbuildingaDSPsystem,thedesigncantakeadvantageofparallelstructuresandarithmeticalgorithmstominimizeresourcesandexceedperformanceofsingleormultiplepurpose

5、DSPdevices.DSPdesignersusingbothASICandFPGAwithinthesamedesigncanoptimizeasystemforperformancebeyondthecapabilitiesofeitherseparatecircuittechnology.OtherapplicationsthatlendthemselvestothehybridASIC/FPGAapproacharedesignsthatsupportmultiplestandardssuchasUSB,FireWireandCameraLink,inasingled

6、evice.Similarly,designsthatarefinalized,withtheexceptionofanyundefinedfeaturesoremergingstandards,areexcellentcandidatesforthistechnology.Withoutthebenefitofprogrammablelogic,thedesignermustdecidebetweentaping-outthechipknowingthatthePCIlogichasahighprobabilityforchange,orwaitinguntilthedesi
