1、1.IntroductionSinceancienttime,Chinaboastsplentyofprofoundprose.AndtheChinesemodernprosewritingsrefertothosewritteninvernacularChineseaftertheMay4thMovement.Abundantastheyare,translationsoftheprosehavealwaysbeenscarce,laggingbehindrenderingsonothertypesofliterature,probablyduetothefeatureofpros
2、e,namely,“formally-looseandessence-focused”.Variousforms,substantialcontentsandthedifferencesbetweenChineseandEnglishproseallcontributetothedifficultiesoftranslatingChineseproseintoEnglish.However,ProfessorZhangPeijihasalwaysmadesuchgreateffortsinrenderingChinesemodernprosewritingsintoEnglishth
3、athisyears-bornfruitSelectedModernChineseProseWritingshasbeenworshippedinthetranslationcircleasalandmarkintheprosetranslation.Astothestudiesonproserendering,progresshasbeenmadeaswell.Recently,thereareagrowingnumberofscholarswhohavestartedtoconductresearchandmakeanalysisontheprosetranslationfrom
4、differentvantagepoints,suchasaesthetics,rhetorics,reproducingstyle,recreatingtheartisticconception,translators’subjectivity,etc.Researchersareintendedtoblazeanewtrialtoappreciateandappraisethosetranslationworks,exploringtodevelopthebestpossibletranslationtheoryonprosewritings.Yetthosetheoriesar
5、enotsystematicwithapredominantschool.Analysesandstudiesarestillintherudimentaryphasewithgreatpotentialandlargeroomtodevelop.Focusingontranslators’subjectivity,oneperspectivementionedabove,scholarsandtranslatorsbothathomeandabroadhavemadestudiesonthethreebasicconstitutingelementsofit,thatis,acti
6、veness,passivenessandpurposiveness,onthesolidgroundofvariousinfluentialschools,suchaspolysystemtheories,manipulationschool,hermeneutics,deconstructivetheoriesandsoon.Eachindividualtheorymentionedaboveis,byitself,inclusiveofelaborateandevolvingtheory,whichdistinguishesitselffromoneanother.Yetthe
