2、lydeclaredAmerica'sindependencetotheworldandourpurposestotheAlmighty,theyknewthatAmerica,toendure,wouldhavetochange.Notchangeforchange'ssake,butchangetopreserveAmerica'sideals;life,liberty,thepursuitofhappiness.Thoughwemarchtothemusicofourtime,ourmissionistimeless.EachgenerationofAmericansmustde
3、finewhatitmeanstobeanAmerican. Onbehalfofournation,Isalutemypredecessor,PresidentBush,forhishalf-centuryofservicetoAmerica.AndIthankthemillionsofmenandwomenwhosesteadfastnessandsacrificetriumphedoverDepression,fascismandCommunism. Today,agenerationraisedintheshadowsoftheColdWarassumesnewrespon
4、sibilitiesinaworldwarmedbythesunshineoffreedombutthreatenedstillbyancienthatredsandnewplagues. Raisedinunrivaledprosperity,weinheritaneconomythatisstilltheworld'sstrongest,butisweakenedbybusinessfailures,stagnantwages,increasinginequality,anddeepdivisionsamongourpeople. WhenGeorgeWashingtonfir
5、sttooktheoathIhavejustsworntouphold,newstraveledslowlyacrossthelandbyhorsebackandacrosstheoceanbyboat.Now,thesightsandsoundsofthisceremonyarebroadcastinstantaneouslytobillionsaroundtheworld. Communicationsandcommerceareglobal;investmentismobile;technologyisalmostmagical;andambitionforabetterlif
6、eisnowuniversal.Weearnourlivelihoodinpeacefulcompetitionwithpeopleallacrosstheearth. Profoundandpowerfulforcesareshakingandremakingourworld,andtheurgentquestionofourtimeiswhetherwecanmakechangeourfriendandnotourenemy. ThisnewworldhasalreadyenrichedthelivesofmillionsofAmericanswhoareabletocompe
