4、ainsttheJapaneseandremnantsofFrenchcolonialsociety.HoChiMinhcapitalizesontheturmoilbysuccessfullyspreadinghisVietMinhmovement.July1945-FollowingthedefeatofNaziGermany,WorldWarII AlliesincludingtheU.S.,Britain,andSovietUnion,holdthePotsdamConferenceinGermanytoplanthepost-warwo

5、rld.Vietnamisconsideredaminoritemontheagenda.InordertodisarmtheJapaneseinVietnam,theAlliesdividethecountryinhalfatthe16thparallel.ChineseNationalistswillmoveinanddisarmtheJapanesenorthoftheparallelwhiletheBritishwillmoveinanddothesameinthesouth.Duringtheconference,representat

6、ivesfromFrancerequestthereturnofallFrenchpre-warcoloniesinSoutheastAsia(Indochina).Theirrequestisgranted.Vietnam,LaosandCambodiawillonceagainbecomeFrenchcoloniesfollowingtheremovaloftheJapanese.August1945-Japanesesurrenderunconditionally.Vietnam'spuppetemperor,BaoDai,abdicate
