1、CohesionandReadingTeaching1ReadingasanIntegrativeProcess    Formanystudents,readingisbyfarthemostimportantofthefourskillsinsecondlanguages,particularlyinEnglishasaforeignlanguage.Successinreadingcourserequiresthatboththeteacherandthestudentshaveaclearideaaboutthenatureofreading.According

2、topsycholinguisticmodelsofreading.readingisaninteractiveprocessofcommunication(Nuttall,1982).“Apsycholinguisticprocessbywhichthereaderreconstructs,asbestashecan,amessagewhichhasbeenencodedbyawriterasagraphicdisplay”Goodman(1973).AndWiddowson(1979)hasdiscussedreadinginthislightastheproces

3、sofcombiningtextualinformationwiththeinformationareaderbringtoatext.Inthisviewthereadingprocessisnotsimplyamatterofextractinginformationfromthetext.Rather,itisoneinwhichthereadingactivatesarangeofknowledgeinthereader'smindthatheorsheuses,andthat,inturn,mayberefinedandextendedbythenewinfo

4、rmationsuppliedbythetext.Readingisthusviewedasakindofdialoguebetweenthereaderandthetext.CarrollandEisteerhold(1983)concludedthat(1)ourunderstandingofreadingisbestconsideredasaninteractiveprocessthattakesplacebetweenthereaderandthetext.Thebasicconceptisthatthereaderreconstructsthetextinfo

5、rmationbasedinpartontheknowledgedrawnfromthetextandinpartfromthepriorknowledgeavailabletothereader.(2)Readingasaninteractiveprocessreferstotheinteractionofmanycomponentskillspotentiallyinsimultaneousoperation,theinteractionofthesecognitiveskillsleadstofluentreadingcomprehension.Simplysta

6、ted,readinginvolvesbothanarrayoflower-levelrapid,automaticidentificationskillsandanarrayofhigher-levelcomprehensionorinterpretationskills.(Goodman,1973)regardedreadingisnotapassive,butratheranactive,andinfactaninteractive.Processhasbeenrecognizedforsometimeinfirstoractivelanguagereading.
